About Bhutan

The Himalayan Kingdom of  Bhutan lies between India and the Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR) of the People's republic of China. Known as the Land of Thunder Dragon, Bhutan covers about 47,000 sq. kilometres. The unique and exotic country  has a gigantic staircase from a narrow strip of land in the south, while the northern belt is stretched between  an elevation of 300m. to more than 7,000m. in the Himalayas.

With magnificent  mountains, dense forests, fresh air and delightful people, Bhutan has been an attractive destination for tourists with varied tastes and interests. The country is also important from the point of view of art and architecture, culture and religion. Visitors from the developed and industrialised regions may find the scenic  pastoral landscape and lifestyle unique. The houses have brightly decorated window frames and shingled roofs. The green paddy fields,  oak and rhododendron forests, grazing yaks, etc. really win the heart and mind of the visitors.

Bhutan's national language is  Dzongkha. The Bhutanese are called Drukpas.  This is the only country in the world  where the tantric form of Mahayana Buddhism has been  the official religion.
