A Life Among the Mountains

Tika Ram Gurung’s story is one of resilience, passion, and an unbreakable bond with the Himalayas. Born into a humble family in Sankhuwasabha, a stunning mountain village in eastern Nepal, Tika Ram grew up surrounded by the towering peaks that define the region. As a proud member of the Gurung tribe, his heritage is steeped in the traditions of the highlands, where life is both beautiful and challenging.

Growing up in the shadow of the Himalayas, Tika Ram’s early life was shaped by the realities of poverty. To support his family, he began working as a porter at the age of 22, carrying heavy loads along rugged trails for trekking expeditions. It was grueling work, but it brought him closer to the mountains he had always admired. His dedication and grit did not go unnoticed, and soon he took on additional responsibilities as a cook during expeditions.

This humble start ignited a spark within Tika Ram. The mountains, once a backdrop to his daily struggles, became his calling. Just three years later, he seized an opportunity to join his first mountaineering expedition, summiting Mt. Lobuche East (6,183 m). Standing at the peak, he knew his life had changed forever.

From that moment on, Tika Ram’s journey was marked by unyielding determination and an insatiable drive to conquer new heights. His story is not just about climbing mountains—it’s about overcoming challenges, turning dreams into reality, and inspiring others to do the same.
